…Jesus Christ… our Lord
When we hear the word “lord” today, we tend to naturally associate it with Jesus. But in Bible times, the word “lord” was also a term for a person in high authority who had absolute control over others. If we say and sincerely mean that Jesus is our Lord, we say we yield to and acknowledge his complete and total rule over our lives.
On the day of Pentecost Peter boldly proclaimed “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” Acts 2:36 (NIV) According to this statement, God himself established Jesus’ authority as Lord.
In Luke 6:5 Jesus claimed to be the Lord of the Sabbath. He declared he had full authority over the Sabbath.
In 1 Corinthians 8:4c-6 (NIV) Paul proclaims, “’There is no God but one.’ 5 For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’),6 yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.” Here Paul is also emphasizing that our very being originated through Christ and that Christ Jesus sustains our lives today.
