Jesus Christ… born of the virgin Mary
Mary was a virgin when she gave birth to Christ Jesus.
Many theologians in recent years have discounted Mary’s virginity. They look for loopholes in scripture to justify their skepticism claiming the word “virgin” only meant a young unmarried girl.
But a careful reading of the scripture makes it clear that those who wrote about the virgin birth in the Bible meant a woman who had not participated in sexual intercourse with a man.
Click here to read Luke 1:26-38. Note Mary’s question to the angel – “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” Would this question make sense if we re-defined the word “virgin?” I think not.
Check out Matthew 1:18-24. Joseph believed the angel who appeared to him in a dream, and took Mary as his wife. But Matthew tells us he did not have sexual relations with her until after baby Jesus was born.
