Once Adam and Eve broke God’s law they lost harmony with God and needed his forgiveness. All of humanity lost fellowship with God at that point in time.

In the covenant God made with the people in the days of Moses, God required the priests to made animal sacrifices for the sins of the people. Hebrews 10:3-5 explains that the animal sacrifices of the Old Testament couldn’t really take away sins. The people continued to sin and to turn away from God.

Jesus came to serve. Through his teachings, his death on the cross and his resurrection he demonstrated his perfect love for people. His death was the only perfect sacrifice that could truly take away our sins. See Hebrews 10:14-18.

Forgiveness is available to all who recognize their sin, and confess and repent of their sin. 1 John 1:9 says “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (NIV) See also 1 John 1:8-20.

How far does God remove our sins from us? As far as the east is from the west. See Psalm 103:12.

What does God expect from us in return for his forgiveness? Read Mark 11:25. Every time we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we are reminded that we must forgive others in the same way that Christ has forgiven us.
