Brief overview of the passages for this week:
Esther 6-10
- King Xerxes couldn’t sleep after the first banquet with Queen Ester, Mordecai, and Haman, so he studied old records and discovered that Mordecai had never been rewarded for saving his life.
- The next morning the king asked Haman to show great honor for Mordecai all through the streets of town. Later he came to the second banquet totally deflated.
- Showdown – Esther reveals to the king Haman’s plot to have all the Jewish people killed and that she herself was a Jew.
- Haman and his brothers were hung on the gallows Haman had set up to hang Mordecai.
- The King made provisions for the Jewish people to defend themselves.
Ezra 7-10
- Artaxerxes, king of Persia, allowed Ezra to go to Jerusalem to teach the people God’s laws.
- The people had again worshiped the idols that the foreigners in their land worshiped.
- Ezra prayed for the people and they repented and promised to serve God from that time on.
Nehemiah
- Nehemiah learned that the wall around Jerusalem was still lying in ruins even though many people had returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the temple.
- King Artaxerxes of Persia allowed Nehemiah to go to Jerusalem to help the people rebuild the wall around Jerusalem.
- Because of opposition from enemies, the people had to carry weapons as they worked on the wall.
- The people completed building the wall in 52 days. Ezra read the laws to the people and they responded by worshiping God and asking him to forgive their sins.
- The people dedicated the wall to God.
Malachi
- The Jewish people still fell into sin after returning to Jerusalem from captivity.
- God told the people about the coming Savior.
- God warned the people of judgement if they didn’t stop sinning.
