I’ll not plan to post about every chapter in the New Testament this year. But every now and then there may be something that I truly want to share about what I read. One such instance is in Mark 1:16-18. I can recall many Sunday school lessons on this chapter as the teacher impressed upon us how quickly the disciples dropped what they were doing to follow Jesus. I don’t mean to diminish their quick decision to follow Jesus, it was quick. But perhaps Jesus wasn’t a total stranger to them by the time he called them to be his Disciples.

Those who are beginning the “5x5x5 New Testament Bible Reading Plan” by Navigators in January will begin reading the book of Mark this week.

Mark is believed to be the first of the Gospels to be written, and the author believed to be John Mark who accompanied Paul on some of his mission journeys. Mark is the shortest Gospel yet includes many details. It is a fast-paced book and often uses words like suddenly and immediately. Mark begins with John the Baptist, the baptism of Jesus, the temptations Jesus faced when confronted by Satan, and the choosing of the Twelve Disciples.

Over the past four years I have been following various intensive Bible reading plans, and I have benefited greatly from what I’ve learned. The greater portion of the Bible is Old Testament and through the time spent in studying it I am better grounded for understanding the New Testament. This year I plan to focus more intently on the New Testament with a sincere desire to gain greater insights for applying what I read to my own life and personal growth.

The Navigators have created a “5x5x5 New Testament Bible Reading Plan.” The reading calls for one chapter a day for five days a week. So the first 5 stands for 5 minutes a day and the second 5 stands for 5 days a week. The third 5 stands for their 5 suggestions for ways to dig deeper into the readings. These are all listed on the downloadable PDF file. Print it on both sides of a single sheet of paper and fold it so it will fit nicely into your Bible.

Congratulations on completing reading through the Bible in chronological order in 2019! I have created a “Certificate of Accomplishment” for those who finish this reading plan. It isn’t intended for hanging on the wall or for bragging rights, but as a memento of a job well done. It is printed on a half-sheet of paper so you can keep it in your Bible if you like. You are on the honor system. You know if you finished or not.
